Dhadak Trailer: Of Janhvi Kapoor And Ishaan Khatte...

The trailer of Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter's Dhadak, their much-awaited film, has just released. The 3-minute long video takes us to Janhvi and Ishaan's journey of love, which initially was one-sided. The plot is set in Rajasthan and the trailer begins on Madhur (Ishaan) telling (Parthavi) Janhvi, "Main thare liye ek din bahot badi kothi banauga." To which, she replies, "Badi kothi nahi chahiye, mane mhaara ghar chahiye." The video begins on Madhur, who is totally smitten by Parthavi, and does everything possible to impress her. (Even hilariously translates a Hindi song to English to win over her love). Later, she falls in love with him too but like all love stories, there are certain hurdles in their relationship. In their case, Ashutosh Rana plays the villain. When Parthavi family opposes, the duo elope to Kolkata. However, regret their decision later. Dhadak is a tale of infatuation, love and heartbreak, portrayed beautifully on screen. Their innocent romance will surely win everyone's hearts.

Watch the trailer of Dhadak here.

hadak is Janhvi's debut film in Bollywood. She is the daughter of late actress Sridevi and filmmaker Boney Kapoor. Meanwhile, Ishaan debuted in the industry with Indo-Iranian director Majid Majidi's film Beyond The Clouds.

Ahead of Dhadak trailer launch, Janhvi's brother Arjun and uncle Sanjay Kapoor shared these messages for her.

Dhadak is an adaptation of National Award-winning Marathi blockbuster Sairat. Of the film's plot, Shashank Khaitan had earlier said, "The basic premise (of Dhadak and Sairat) is same. But there are variations. My story is based on another set up. It is (set) in Rajasthan. It comes with its own challenges, conflicts and style of a love story."

Dhadak, produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, is all set to hit the screens on July 20.

Akshay Kumar's Toilet: Ek Prem Katha tops opening ...

Akshay Kumar's satirical comedy-drama Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (TEPK), which landed in mainland screens on 8 June, has topped the opening weekend in China box-office with a cumulative three-day gross of $9.05 million (Rs 61.1 crore), holding off competition from Disney/Marvel's blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War, the local smash hit How Long Will I Love U and Jean-Claude Van Damme's action thriller Black Water.

The opening weekend total of $9.05 million (Rs 61.1 crore) has powered the film's worldwide earnings to Rs 277.6 crore. Although the PRC weekend takings of TEPK surpassed Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan($8.75 million) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion ($7.63 million), it fell short of weekend performances of other Indian films such as Secret Superstar ($27.72 million), Hindi Medium ($21.2 million) and Dangal($14.2 million).

However, TEPK, with a day-one theatrical revenue of $2.35 million (Rs 15.8 crore), registered the fourth biggest opening for an Indian film, only behind Secret Superstar ($6.97 million), Hindi Medium ($3.43 million) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion ($2.43 million). It edged past the $2.24 million opening day bow of Bajrangi Bhaijaan which released for the Lantern festival weekend in March. While TEPK debuted at No.2 on 8 June, the film topped the box-office chart on both 9 and 10 June and witnessed an excellent 53 percent growth on day two.

Talking to Firstpost, an elated Shibasish Sarkar, COO, Reliance Entertainment, said, "The film has definitely performed well in the first three days. It's more than what we expected initially. But, the crucial time starts on 11 June. It has a lesser rating than Dangal and other films. Although the ratings were out on 8 June (Friday), the film witnessed good growth on Saturday and Sunday with word-of-mouth picking up. Now, we have to see how it performs on the weekdays. And, Jurassic World is releasing next week in China, which will definitely take up substantial number of shows"

With close to 12,000 screens, TEPK received the fourth biggest Indian release in China after Secret Superstar (21,000), Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (19,000) and Hindi Medium (17,000). However, it received the widest release for an Indian film with a show count of over 66,000. It's the third Indian movie after Secret Superstar (55,860) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (52,955) to open with 50,000+ shows in the Middle Kingdom. For a genre like satirical comedy, TEPK holds a good score of 8.2 on China’s popular ticket selling and box-office platform Maoyan and a decent 7.2 rating on review aggregator site Douban from 10,148 votes.

Shibasish says Chinese market has become more receptive to Indian films, which are either content-based or social-themed stories, which they can connect.

"Aamir Khan has undoubtedly made a mark for himself, and he is in a different league in China when compared to other Indian stars. The business Hindi Medium did in China surprised everyone. Relatively, Baahubali 2 could not perform well since visual spectacle is something Chinese moviegoers are accustomed to in Hollywood films and local movies. They expect content-driven films from India. I think the market has opened up well for India. I know it's going to be tedious to score a simultaneous release in China, but if we figure it out somehow, it will be a huge potential market for content-based films. For TEPK, the distributor has already recovered his cost on the second day itself," he explained.

Produced by Reliance Entertainment and directed by Shree Narayan Singh, TEPK, which is titled Toilet Hero in China, is the fifth Indian film to be imported into the Middle Kingdom this year after Aamir Khan's Secret Superstar, Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Irrfan Khan's Hindi Medium and Prabhas-SS Rajamouli's Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which winded up its China theatrical run with $11.9 million (Rs 80 crore) gross.

TEPK also marks Reliance Entertainment's second film in the world's second-largest market after Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots, which grossed nearly $2.2 million and sparked off the ascent of Indian movies in China when it released in 2011, two years after its Indian release. Donald Tang's Tang Media Partners, a Reliance Entertainment affiliate, has handled the distribution rights of the film and Lianrui Picture of PRC's state-owned corporation China Film Group has released the movie.

In April, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Salman Khan’s sports drama Sultan were screened at the 8th Beijing International Film Festival in the Horizon section of Beijing Film Panorama. Shree Narayan Singh and producer Shital Bhatia of Friday Filmworks attended the screening and participated in a post-screening Q&A session with the audience, who showered lavish praise on the movie.

The three-day gross of $9.05 million has steered the film's cumulative overseas total to $13.55 million, making Toilet: Ek Prem Katha the highest-grossing movie of Akshay Kumar in offshore markets.

Veere Di Wedding Movie Review: Kareena Kapoor, Son...

Cast: Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker, Shikha Talsania

Director: Shashanka Ghosh

Rating: 3.5 stars (out of 5)

"Do you know who his mother is?" Three girls giggle in mock scandal after the fourth girl comes back from an unexpected tryst, and this question is posed to remind the straying girl that she has just slept with the son of a notorious gossip. The query, asked in an unmistakably Delhi vernacular ("You know na uski Ma kaun hai?) mirrors that familiar cliche of North Indian masculinity - "Jaanta nahin mera Baap kaun hai?" - where men play bully by asking others if they know who their father is, as if the asker himself was mildly concussed and had forgotten.

Veere Di Wedding, an all-girl ensemble comedy directed by Shashanka Ghosh and written by Nidhi Mehra and Mehul Suri, subverts the usual and the expected at many a bend. It starts out as a buddy film set in the familiar band baaja baroque world of a Delhi wedding, but there is more to this film than initially meets the eye, and certainly more to these ladies than meets the guys. This is a film that rolls its eyes at 'happily ever after.' It knows weddings are hard, marriages take work, and that, occasionally, pampered princes need to be knocked off the moon-shaped thrones picked out by their mothers.

When we first meet the four heroines, they're in school uniform. Theirs is the kind of early sisterhood that predates judgement; they are friends first, before being battered by world and circumstance into becoming the adults they become. Like us, all four characters are dysfunctional and broken in their own way, but they are honest and unmerciful, committed to each other. They derive their fierceness from being a unit. We can sit near them, but - to borrow from Tina Fey's Mean Girls - we can't sit with them.

They don't know what they want. Sakshi is a flamboyantly wealthy brat struggling with a divorce who likes her drinks straight-up, Meera is an exasperated mother who is only too glad to leave her Batman-pyjama'd child in more grown-up hands; Avni is a divorce lawyer who really (really) wants to get married; and Kalindi, on the other hand, is the child of an oddly broken home, preparing to tie the knot while not believing in it.

The film starts off far too loud, with incessant and overdone background music and sound effects to try and tickle audiences. This makes Veere De Wedding feel, at first, like a bad sitcom, which is not just at odds with the authentic performances but occasionally makes them appear less subtle than they are. Shikha Talsania and Kareena Kapoor perform impressively - and casually - enough to cut through this cheesy treatment, but the film's style initially makes Sonam Kapoor and Swara Bhasker appear a bit broad, even though all four characters play off each other very well.

The writing is assured and nuanced, with telling details about these girls, their men, and their families. After a while as the over-the-top background sounds settle - or we get used to them - the film's cleverness becomes apparent. Veere Di Wedding lands several blows to the patriarchy while never giving up its masala entertainer roots. It is the kind of film that needs to work because of what it says.

It is a film that features a nonchalantly, openly gay couple, but not an eyebrow is ever raised and there isn't a whiff of homophobia. It is a film where a girl lying about a phone call says it was Airtel, that relentless spam provider we have all been struck by. It is a film where a bride is amused by her choreographer, and later, when she's caught downing a few glasses by the wedding cameraman, she doesn't miss a beat when asking him to delete it later. Right now she's drinking, and that's what matters.

Here, a striking girl is repelled by an obnoxious young man. She is appropriately mortified by his opening question - "Are you from Khalsa College?" - and doesn't care to find out his name, referring to him, dismissively, by his last name, 'Bhandari,' saying it as if he were her upholsterer or property dealer. Yet there are some of her itches even this man without a first name can scratch, and this film and the girl are brave enough to acknowledge that.

The casting is clever and spot-on. Kareena Kapoor is terrific as Kalindi, waking up and forgetting which hand the ring finger is on. She, the most mainstream of heroines - in this irreverent, family-hating part - gives this foulmouthed film new subversive meaning, while giving audiences something surprising. Shikha Talsania's disgruntled Meera brings warmth and believability to the film, and the immensely likeable actress never hits a false note. I really look forward to seeing her in more films.

Swara Bhasker plays against type as the party girl, Sakshi, in too-short dresses and too few inhibitors, chided for her language even by her friends. Her character seems too cartoonish in her nastiness - in comparison to the other girls - early on, but Bhasker makes them earn her affection. It is once Sakshi comes in for the group hugs that they begin to matter. Sonam Kapoor admirably plays the most messed-up girl, Avni, one who likes saying things like "no sex before the ring ceremony" but likes also to be goaded into 'climbing aboard' new young men by her friends. Kapoor is at her most natural, and many will take this candid performance as proof that this is what the actress must really be like. What better compliment is there?

The cast is solid all around, but other performers I'd single out are Sukesh Arora as Keshav, a silent and stylish man who speaks volumes with his eyes, Vishwas Kinni who makes Bhandari both unmistakably loutish yet vaguely charming, Sumeet Vyas as the groom who used to think only his mother was crazy, and Ekavali Khanna as a stepmother with an alarmingly loud cackle.

Friends are the new family. Weddings are now as much about parents giving away the bride as they are about friends entrusting her to a man they approve of. Veere Di Wedding gets this fantastic bond right, and gives us four dramatically different kinds of women with agency and spirit. Nobody stands in the way of their decisions. Some girls will always choose to argue, just as some mothers will always choose to harangue. We haven't seen these ladies on screen before, and they will serve as an awakening. India could do with an alarm call. Sometimes we need a movie to tell us what an orgasm means.
