An Aamir Khan Friday after three years

While Aamir Khan's films have always been closely guarded and little is given away in terms of plots and storylines, 'Talaash', which releases today, definitely takes the cake.

What we do know is that Talaash is a suspense drama, which has been mostly shot at night on the streets of Mumbai and various other locations in the city. But what piques ourcuriosity most, apart from the storyline, is the fact that Aamir Khan is coming out with a film after three years and how he is going to raise the bar as far as viewers' expectations are concerned.

"Aamir has always had an impressive track record with his films Rang De Basanti, Fanaa, Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini and 3 idiots. He comes up with something new each time he meets you in the theatres, and that is why an Aamir Khan-Friday always yields something significant," a trade source says.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui also plays an important part in Talaash?

One would wonder why Nawazuddin Siddiqui wasn't there for any of the film's promotional activities. The reason for keeping his character under wraps was that they wanted to keep the mystery element of the film intact. He wasn't seen at any interactions because the crew wasn't sure if he would be able to dodge questions about his character. So they kept him out of all promotions.

Talaash, presented by Reliance Entertainment, releases today.

To play Kishore, Ranbir has to put weight on : Basu

That Ranbir Kapoor will play Kishore Kumar in Anurag Basu's biopic on the legendary singer has been reported earlier. The latest on this front is the actor will require at least six months of preparation and a minimum of year and a half of shooting for what is being billed as the most difficult role of his career yet.

It doesn't end there. Ranbir will have to sport three looks in the film to portray three different stages in Kishore Kumar's life. And the toughest aspect of this transition will be the weight gain. The older Kishore will have to be at least 12-15 kg heavier than his younger avatar.

Basu confirmed the news and said, "Ranbir will have to bulk up in the course of the character's development. Ranbir will have to play Kishore right from the time he was 19 till he turned 58. It is not going to be easy at all for Ranbir."

On the subject of piling on the pounds, a source close to the project said, "The Kapoor Khandaan is known to put on weight even when they sniff at a calorie. Ranbir is the scrawniest Kapoor but avoids putting on weight. For Kishore, he has no choice."

Luckily for Basu, Kishore Kumar's son Amit Kumar is on board and will guide them throughout. "We're fortunate to have him with us. However, Ranbir will first complete Besharam with Abhinav Kashyap," said Basu.

So, Ranbir will prepare himself for Basu's biopic while working on Kashyap's caper about a con-man from Delhi.

Meanwhile, Basu will use the time to finish the script that is on the verge of completion. He has even got on board Soumik Sen, who has written films like Meerabai Not Out and Hum Tum Aur Ghost. "For the first time, I am co-writing a script with another writer. Kishore is a subject that requires a lot of research," said Basu.

Kishore's songs will be sung by his son Amit. And while they are still being selected, we hear Ranbir will be seen crooning his father Rishi Kapoor's popular number Oh Hanseeni on screen.

3. Amrita Arora

Following Amrita Arora’s hasty marriage announcement to beau Shakeel Ladak, tongues started wagging about what really prompted Amu to take the wedding vows in such a hurry. Amrita’s immediate pregnancy pretty much confirmed the reason of her sudden wedding.

Movie Review: Life of Pi

Cast: Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Tabu

Direction: Ang Lee

Rating: ****

Ang Lee takes on the arduous task of translating Yann Martel's 'Life of Pi' into cinema, a book that deeply philosophizes faith, hope and illusion. Ang Lee transports you into Pi's world; as a viewer you might be captivated by the visual spectacle that the director has managed to create on screen but you are also fascinated by the young boy who is struggling to survive at sea and is trying to come to terms with his relationship with God.

Piscine Molitor Patel (Pi) is quite a spiritual boy from his childhood. His family runs a zoo in Pondicherry and Pi is distraught when they decide to relocate to Canada. As the family sets assail in a ship with the zoo animals, a terrible storm leaves Pi (Suraj Sharma) shipwrecked, stranded on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. They manage a miraculous feat of surviving 227 days at sea braving storms, hunger and a carnivorous island among many other challenges.

A film with a handful of characters and essentially with a teenager and a tiger playing the lead might have become a tedious watch but Lee keeps the audience engaged in every frame. Irrfan Khan as the elder Pi is compelling in the small role that he plays and is in essence, the narrator who holds the plot together, making the transitions easy and providing perspective where necessary.

Seventeen-year-old Suraj Sharma is impressive as the younger Pi. Not only does his character go through a lot of physical changes through the length of the film but you see a rare sensitivity on his face as he is completely unprepared for the adversities that confront him.

However, the star of the film is unquestionably the director of this magnum opus, Ang Lee. Not only is the cinematic experience in 3 D fascinating but the storytelling is seamless. Like Irrfan Khan had said when I had interviewed him, "It's cinema at its best".

Madhuri-Juhi together in Gulab Gang

In a casting coup of sorts, two heroines,Madhuri Dixit Nene and Juhi Chawla, who were pitted against one another for the top rank through the late 80s and 90s; but who haven't been seen together sharing screen space, are coming together for the first time in Anubhav Sinha's 'Gulab Gang'.

The film needed two strong performers. Anubhav, who had finalised Madhuri earlier, was looking for his second leading lady for a while now. It was just a few days ago that Juhi agreed to be a part of the project.

Says Anubhav, "Gulab Gang is about two iconic female characters. I couldn't have pulled off a better cast than the two most iconic female stars, Madhuri and Juhi, together for the first time on Indian screen. My film is an action and drama piece with two women at loggerheads. I needed actors who would justifiably match up to each other, both in terms of their performance and stature. I think, this is the best the film could get, because the subject material is so strong."

Juhi, who is riding high because of the numerous compliments she has received for her fantastic performance in Son of Sardaar is said to be kicked about the fact that she is getting into another very exciting film with Madhuri.

What is Gulabi Gang
Gulabi Gang is a women's group from Uttar Pradesh's Bundelkhand region that takes up the cause of women facing violence, domestic and social problems. The leader of the gang is Bigg Boss contestant Sampat Pal. Pal was eliminated a couple of weeks back from the reality show. Though there have been talks about the film being based on Pal's life, the director has denied it.

Talaash: Aamir Khan takes tips from night patrolling cops

There are very few actors, who keep it extremely perfect for their character on the film, Aamir Khan is one such actor.

For his upcoming film Talaash, Aamir took special care of his character inspector Shekhawat. The actor apparently took help of night patrolling cops to prepare for his role.

According to source, "Almost all of the major scenes have been shot during the night. Since the shooting would take place after sunset, there would be cops on the sets. Aamir often chatted with them asking details about their work and enquiry about the places that they would visit often."

Another Source adds, "Night seems to be a key player in the film's storyline. The idea of making this film had also stemmed from an incident involving cops that was witnessed by Zoya andReema who then wrote this project."

'Twilight' Film Champ in Box Office Despite News of Alleged Terrorist Attack

This film image released by Summit Entertainment shows Kristen Stewart, left, and Robert Pattinson in a scene from "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2."

A teenager who wanted to re-enact the deadly "Dark Knight" shooting during a midnight screening of the "Twilight" franchise last month almost ruined the opening of the movie. But the thwarted plot also failed to make a dent on box office numbers.

The film was triumphant in the box office, pulling in $141.3 million domestically over opening weekend and $199.6 million more overseas for a worldwide debut of $340.9 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The finale starring Latina actress Mia Maeatro, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, ranks eighth on the list of all-time domestic debuts, and leaves "Twilight" with three of the top-10 openings, joining 2009's "New Moon" (No. 7 with $142.8 million) and last year's "Breaking Dawn — Part 1" (No. 9 with $138.1 million).

The latest “Twilight” franchise, however, was almost ruined by 20-year-old Blaec Lammers, after he was caught attempting to re-enact “The Dark Knight” shooting in Aurora, Color. during a midnight screening of Twilight.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Lammers from, Bolivar, Missouri, told authorities he purchased multiple rifles and tons of ammunition as well as his tickets to the awaited film. Lammers’ mother turned him into the police.

Though "Twilight" still is a female-driven franchise, with girls and women making up 79 percent of the opening-weekend audience, the finale drew the biggest male crowds in the series. Action-minded guys had more to root for in the finale as Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner join in a colossal battle to end the story of warring vampires and werewolves.

"Our male audience particularly has enjoyed this film," said Richie Fay, head of distribution for Lionsgate, whose Summit Entertainment banner releases the "Twilight" movies. "With the action scenes in this one, we're hoping the holdover business will reflect the fact that males have kind of found it out."

The movie also helped lift Lionsgate into the big leagues among Hollywood studios. Paced by its $400 million smash with "The Hunger Games" and now the "Twilight" finale, Lionsgate surpassed $1 billion at the domestic box office for the first time.

'Twilight' finale ranks 8th highest-grossing debut in US

'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2' has been ranked eighth on the list of all-time domestic debuts.

According to studio estimates Sunday, the 'Twilight' finale has grossed 141.3 million dollars domestically over opening weekend and 199.6 million dollars more overseas for a worldwide debut of 340.9 dollars million, the New York Post reported.

The new entry leaves "Twilight" with three of the top-10 openings, joining 2009's "New Moon" (No. 7 with 142.8 million dollars) and last year's "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" (No. 9 with 138.1 million dollars).

Last May's " The Avengers" is No. 1 with 207.4 million dollars. "Batman" is the only other franchise with more than one top-10 opening: July's "The Dark Knight Rises" (No. 3 with 160.9 million dollars) and 2008's "The Dark Knight" (No. 4 with 158.4 million dollars).

The finale of the series also drew the biggest male crowds.

"Our male audience particularly has enjoyed this film," said Richie Fay, head of distribution for Lionsgate, whose Summit Entertainmentbanner releases the "Twilight" movies.

Some box-office watchers had expected the last "Twilight" movie to open with a franchise record the way the " Harry Potter" finale did last year with 169.2 million dollars, the second-best domestic debut on the charts.

"I thought that for the final installment, it might eclipse the franchise record, but to look at 141.3 million dollars and say that's a disappointment, that's kind of crazy," said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker

In the weekend box office, the "Twilight" finale took over the No. 1 spot from Sony's James Bondadventure "Skyfall," which slipped to second place with 41.5 million dollars domestically in its second weekend.

Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis' Civil War drama "Lincoln" expanded nationwide after a week in limited release and came in at No. 3 with 21 million dollars.

Top ten movies in this weekend are -

1. " The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2," $141.3 million ($199.6 million international).

2. 'Skyfall,' 41.5 million dollars (49.6 million dollars international)

3. 'Lincoln,' 21 million dollars

4. 'Wreck-It Ralph,' 18.3 million dollars (4.8 million dollars international)

5. 'Flight,' 8.6 million dollars (1 million dollars international)

6. 'Argo,' 4.1 million dollars

7. 'Taken 2,' 2.1 million dollars (2 million dollars international)

8. 'Pitch Perfect,' 1.3 million dollars (4.1 million dollars international)

9. 'Here Comes the Boom,' 1.2 million dollars.

10 (tie). 'Cloud Atlas,' 900,000 dollars.

10 (tie). 'Hotel Transylvania,' 900,000 dollars.

10 (tie). 'The Sessions,' 900,000 dollars.

18 saris and a temple wedding for Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan's pet designer Sabyasachi will source the silk from Chennai and also fly down to Mumbai for a 'dress rehearsal'

Vidya Balan or Siddharth Roy Kapur may choose to stay mum about their wedding plans but the preparations have surely begun. To start with, on his return from London, fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee will be scouring the streets of Chennai for some exquisite Madras silk that will form the base of Vidya's bridal sari.

Vidya, who has already placed an order for 18 hand-crafted saris from the designer, apparently has some specifications about the two she will be wearing on her D-Day. "She has placed an order for 18 saris with us. Out of that, two will be bridal wear and rest can be worn by the bride during the day. Apparently, Vidya will be getting married in the morning according to Tamil traditions. Though most of the saris are ready, the ones that will be based on Madras silk, will be done by Pepsi (Sabyasachi's pet name) himself. We are waiting for him to come back from London. On his way back he is going to stop over in Chennai to source the silk," said one of Sabya's staff members at his Kolkata studio.

Incidentally, Vidya needs quite a few sari changes during the wedding ceremony and has thus ordered a wide range. While most of her saris will be dark hued, she has ordered six that are multi-coloured. "There are some saris for her sister and her mother as well. Plus some that she'll give away as a marriage gift to her relatives.

The deadline that we are working on for delivering the saris is December 1," said the staff member confirming rumours of a December wedding of Vidya and her SRK. To dress his favourite brand ambassador, Sabya has put his best tailors and craftsmen on the job."He has specified very conservative cuts for the cholis.

But we are all waiting for him to return so that we can start working on the bridal saris," the staff member added. In fact, the designer is scheduled to arrive in Mumbai during the second-week of December to help Vidya with a "dress-rehearsal".

Though Vidya hasn't responded to queries about her marriage except for indicating in one of her earlier interviews that she is getting married "soon", sources revealed there is a possibility of the wedding being held in a south Indian temple. This will be followed by a reception in Mumbai.

"Both Vidya and Siddharth want to keep it simple. We only know that she will be available for dress trials during the second-week of December," the source told us.

Interestingly, Vidya has already asked for a fortnight's leave during the second-week of December from the shooting of Ghanchakkar (with Emraan Hashmi in the lead). Considering that the film is being co-produced by Siddharth, we believe the leave has been duly sanctioned.

Akshay helped me learn Marathi for 'Khiladi 786': Asin

Actress Asin Thottumkal had to learn Marathi for her upcoming film " Khiladi 786" and says co-star Akshay Kumar was a great help.

"I had to learn Marathi but Akshay was a great help because he speaks Marathi very fluently and all my dialogues have a Hindi accent with a little Maharashtrian touch and this is the first time I am playing such a character, an out-and-out Maharashtrian girl called Indu Tendulkar," the 27-year-old said while promoting the film at a mall.

"So, it was a lot of fun. I went all out for the character and hopefully it will have a good response," she added.

Asin's last two films "Housefull 2" and "Bol Bachchan" were superhits and she hopes "Khiladi 786" turns out to be even a bigger hit.

"Hopefully, keeping fingers crossed for a hat-trick. This year really has been very good for me with 'Housefull 2' and 'Bol Bachchan' doing really, really well. I hope 'Khiladi 786' follows and hopefully breaks the record of the last two ones and I am looking forward to that," Asin said.

Directed by Ashish R. Mohan, "Khiladi 786" hits theatres Dec 7.

I'm in film industry because of Yashji: Aishwarya

Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan credits late filmmaker Yash Chopra as a major reason why she stepped into the film industry, and says he will always remain special to her.

"Yashji is very special to me because he is one of the reasons that I am in the film industry. He is one of the main reasons because he is the one who kept talking to me for two years before I joined the industry, to convince me," the 39-year-old said Wednesday on the sideline of a Children's Day event in Mumbai.

"He always used to tease me, he used to say become an architect, design my sets and then you will definitely come in front of the camera, I'll see to it. So he is just such a special person even to me," she added.

Aishwarya, who worked in Yash Raj Films' (YRF) Mohabbatein and Dhoom 2, says she shared a very personal relationship with the filmmaker, who passed away Oct 21, following dengue and subsequent multi-organ failure.

"Today, of course, I am married to Abhishek (Bachchan) and part of the family and he (Yashji) used to say that 'Ab toh tum bahu ban gayi ho' (Now you are like my daughter-in-law), so that is how personal it was. He has a very special place in my heart and my life," she said.

Aishwarya also featured in the hit item number Kajra re from the YRF film Bunty Aur Babli.
