Meanwhile, talking about her upcoming films "Dedh Ishqiya" and "Gulab Gang", Madhuri said: "I am looking forward to 'Dedh Ishqiya'. It has Naseerji (Naseeruddin Shah), Arshad Warsi who are very good actors. It will be great working with them."

Colours that dominated the Oscars

Pale blush, greys and metallic sparkle grace Oscars red carpetz

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Ethereal, strapless silhouettes and wavy tresses gave the Oscars red carpet a patina of old Hollywood glamour on Sunday as the year's top actresses and presenters led the way in blush, grey and black sequined gowns.

"Silver Linings Playbook" Best Actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence, 22, wowed critics with her off-white Christian Dior Couture strapless gown with a full-tiered skirt and a long necklace dropping down her back.

The actress, who is the face of Christian Dior's Miss Dior brand and has been wearing the designer to the awards leading up to the Oscars, said it was the only dress she tried on for the event.

Fellow Dior brand ambassador Charlize Theron wore a white strapless couture gown from the French fashion house.

Halterneck column gowns were a popular trend on the red carpet as stars opted for a long and lean silhouette this year.

"Les Miserables" star and Best Supporting Actress nominee Anne Hathaway split critics with her blush pink Prada halterneck satin strapless gown with a daring low back. In an interview on the red carpet Hathaway quipped, "it's business in the front and party in the back."

Her co-star Amanda Seyfried opted for a pale grey and lilac embroidered Alexander McQueen halterneck dress, while "Twilight" actress and Oscar presenter Kristen Stewart wore a blush halterneck Reem Acra dress.

Blush and nude hues were a hot trend on the runways for spring. "The Master" supporting actress nominee Amy Adams stunned crowds in a strapless pale grey full-skirted tulle Oscar de la Renta gown, while last year's supporting actress winner Octavia Spencer wore a blush Tadashi Shoji number.

Contrasting the off-white gowns were the actresses picking gold, gunmetal greys and bright colors that stood out on the red carpet at Hollywood's Dolby Theater.

Jessica Chastain, nominated for Best Actress for "Zero Dark Thirty," channeled golden-age Hollywood glamour with a deep gold sequined Armani Prive strapless dress, accessorizing with soft side waves in her auburn hair.

"There were no misses this year, everyone had very good taste," said Avril Graham, executive fashion and beauty editor at Harper's Bazaar.

"Anne Hathaway had a shade of Audrey Hepburn in her pastel Prada and Jessica Chastain was a superstar red carpet hit in her gold sleek shimmering Armani," she added.

Naomi Watts, Best Actress nominee for "The Impossible," wore a gunmetal sequined one-shouldered Giorgio Armani gown while Zoe Saldana's white strapless bustier Alexis Mabille dress was offset by grey underlays peeking out.

Metallic sparkle was the pick for Catherine Zeta Jones, in a gold sequined Zuhair Murad gown, Nicole Kidman in a black sequined fitted L'Wren Scott dress and Halle Berry in a strong-shouldered silver and black striped Versace fitted gown.

Quvenzhane Wallis, the 9-year-old actress competing with Best Actress nominees Lawrence, Watts, Chastain and Emmanuelle Riva, accessorized her navy sparkling Armani gown with a fluffy puppy purse.

"The Sessions" Supporting Actress nominee Helen Hunt shunned high-end designers to wear retail brand H&M in a navy blue strapless gown, stunning fashionistas with her choice.

"Lincoln" Supporting Actress nominee Sally Field added color to the red carpet in a full-sleeved vibrant red Valentino dress.

Reese Witherspoon stood out in a strapless cobalt blue Louis Vuitton gown, "Django Unchained" star Kerry Washington wowed critics with her coral and blush Miu Miu dress and Jennifer Garner, holding husband Ben Affleck's hand, wore an eggplant purple strapless flowing Gucci gown.

Ameesha Patel: I’m One of the Most Glamorous Actresses in Bollywood

Ameesha Patel: I’m One of the Most Glamorous Actresses in Bollywood

You’ve are in the news again. Your upcoming films are being talked about too. Does it feel good to be back in the spotlight?
I had to take a break to set up my production company. Managing a production house is a different ball game altogether. It’s not like signing a film and arriving on the set. The production company with my business partner Kuunal Goomer is my baby. I knew I had age, looks and talent on my side. These attributes would stay with me for some time. But the time that it would take to set up this business would not. So I broke away from my existing life to create a new one.

People are surprised that you have more than five films lined up, apart from the two that you’re producing yourself.

Having signed new films with other banners makes me feel complete. I don’t think I could have asked God for anything more. I’m fortunate that I have a business partner like Kuunal who also happens to be my best friend since the past 10 years. His presence in the office allows me to be the actress outside. He takes care of all the nitty-gritty. I’m relieved of the burden of a 1000 things that a producer needs to look into. It’s like I’m having the best of both worlds.

Critics' review: Kai Po Che deserves a standing ovation

Film: Kai Po Che!
Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh, Raj Kumar Yadav, Amrita Puri
Director: Abhishek Kapoor
Producer: Ronnie Screwvala, Siddharth Roy Kapur
Screenplay: Pubali Chaudhari, Supratik Sen, Abhishek Kapoor, Chetan Bhagat
Music: Amit Trivedi

Plot: Based on Chetan Bhagat's novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life, the movie is about three best friends Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput), Omi (Amit Sadh) and Govind (Rajkumar Yadav) – young, ambitious and restless – are trying to make a mark.

Kai Po Che is a triumphant yell in Gujarati uttered when flying kites are cut. The movie is set in exciting times of 2000s– a new millennium has just dawned. In a country where cricket is religion, they hit upon a brilliant plan – to start a training academy that could produce India's next sporting superstars! What follows is the greatest adventure of their lives, as they attempt to navigate the big hurdles in the path of fulfilling their dreams.
Taran Adarsh, Bollywood HungamaKai Po Che cannot be slotted in any particular genre, in my opinion. It depicts unconditional friendship, it portrays 'bromance' as well as romance, it illustrates politics, it exemplifies the passion for a sport (cricket), it talks of the events that unfolded in Gujarat (earthquake, Godhra massacre and the riots). Multi genres, you could say. But, at heart, Kai Po Che remains an emotional saga of three friends and how it stands the test of time. Very similar in spirit to the director's previous outing Rock On!, Farhan Akhtar's Dil Chahta Hai and Zoya Akhtar's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, yet different.

In Kai Po Che, Abhishek brings alive the characters and events most persuasively. He borrows from the novel, but at the same time adds a lot to it with his deft execution. Kai Po Che narrates the story of three friends and is based in the city of Ahmedabad. Abhishek Kapoor has the trappings of a first-rate storyteller -- a fact that was evident in his first two endeavors [Aryan, Rock On!]. In several ways, Rock On! and Kai Po Che are analogous, yet divergent. While Rock On! was urban and metro-centric in terms of content, Kai Po Che has the raw emotional appeal of three middle class guys that strikes a chord with just about anybody and everybody. The three pivotal parts, enacted effortlessly by Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkumar Yadav and Amit Sadh, are the heartbeats of the enterprise. Sushant is a terrific actor, is blessed with wonderful screen presence and gets the timing of his character right. I see tremendous potential in him! Rajkumar Yadav has proved his credentials in the past and shines yet again in a role that's in sharp contrast to the other two characters. He's excellent! Amit Sadh is another remarkable talent to watch out for. Sure, he too has a couple of films to his credit, but his performance in this film will make people notice him. Besides, their on-screen camaraderie is truly infectious. Amrita Puri leaves a strong impression in a movie that's an all-boys' show predominantly.

The supporting cast is equally super. Manav Kaul is magnificent, taking his character to another level. Asif Basra does a splendid job. Digvijay Deshmukh [as Ali] is a revelation. He's incredible!
Verdict: On the whole, Kai Po Che is brimming with solid content. Watch it for the spirit it is made in. Watch it because it's the kind of cinema that pushes the boundaries. Watch it because movies like KAI PO CHE need to be encouraged. A film that deserves an ovation!

Tushar Joshi, DNASet against the backdrop of Ahmedabad, Kai Po Che is a story of friendship between Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput), Omi (Amit Sadh) and Govind (Raj Kumar Yadav). However, this isn’t an ordinary story of bonding, but a kaleidoscope view of the dynamics between the trio that tests their relationship when thrown in the pan of fire ignited by the Godhra riots and the 2001 Gujarat earthquake.

The first half focuses on the camaraderie between the three, with light moments establishing their character traits. However, the second half is where the pace picks up as their town is caught amidst the Hindu-Muslim riots and scarred by the after effects of an earthquake. These events act as a catalyst, showing us the true colours of Ishaan, Omi and Govind, as they struggle to not only keep their friendship alive, but also come face to face with their inner demons.

Casting director Mukesh Chhabra deserves full marks for putting together such an exemplary cast. Attention to detail has been paid as the art director and costume designers bring the colours of Gujarat alive on the big screen. A special nod to Hitesh Sonik who has done a haunting background score. Anay Goswami’s cinematography lights up every frame with finesse.

Kai Po Che! works because it is an ensemble effort. Sushant Singh Rajput makes an effortless debut as Ishaan. He shows the maturity of someone who understands that less is more. Amit Sadh scores in his big scene during the climax where he breaks down and is torn between choosing to seek revenge and honouring his friendship. However, the breakthrough performance has to be of Raj Kumar Gupta who plays Govind. A remarkable actor who takes on the skin of whatever character he is given, Gupta makes us forget his earlier work and leads us to believe that he was born to play Govind. Amrita Puri suits the bill and keeps it mellow in the role of his love interest.
Verdict: Kai Po Che! works on more levels than it fails, and most of it is because of its brilliant execution. Watch it for the performances.

Saibal Chatterjee, NDTVThree buddies battle themselves and the world in pursuit of their dreams. So what’s new? Over the last decade and a bit, Hindi cinema has spun many such tales with success (Dil Chahta Hai, Rang De Basanti, 3 Idiots, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara). The broad similarities apart, Kai Po Che isn't the same kettle of fish – the film is set against the backdrop of the Gujarat riots of a decade ago. It is the first commercial Mumbai movie to go there.

It might not induce instant superlatives. But Kai Po Che is a competently crafted, well acted and consistently engaging drama that makes its point without sinking into preachy paroxysms. While the catastrophes, one natural, the other politically orchestrated, constitute the principal flashpoints of the narrative, it is the story of love, friendship and dreams that Kai Po Che is primarily about. The movie makes no grand statement about the dynamics of communal violence – it is quite apparent that isn’t its intention. In a way, this on-the-surface quality of the treatment works in the film’s favour.

Kai Po Che taps the obvious things – cricket, religion, politics, kite flying, Garba dance and the game of marbles – as it focuses on the eddies of Gujarat’s contemporary history as reflected in the fate of a bunch of believable, ordinary youngsters. Pretty much in the manner of the piece of fiction that it is adapted from (Chetan Bhagat’s The 3 Mistakes of My Life), Kai Po Che keeps things simple and uncluttered. That enhances the film’s mass appeal quotient without compromising on the consistent tinge of realism that director and co-screenwriter Abhishek Kapoor imparts to the tale. As external forces beyond their control and comprehension intervene repeatedly, the threesome is pushed into trying situations that are fraught with danger.
Verdict: Kai Po Che is a must watch.
Ratings: ***1/2

Rubina A Khan, FirstpostKai Po Che, set in 2000, is a story about the three musketeers of Gujarat – Ishaan Bhatt, Omi Shastri and Govind – inseparable childhood friends, who like Alexander Dumas’ characters, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis live by the All for one, one for all motto of the literary classic. Only Kai Po Che’s director, Abhishek Kapoor, describes their camaraderie as Brothers for life.

It is refreshing to see the friendship of three young men on celluloid, without a woman stepping into the equation to cause an imbalance in the predictable film format. It is also devoid of dramatic dialogue, which makes them sound closer to real life conversations. But they have their own song and dance routines, with their lean frames jigging to the tracks, celebrating their new shop, life or an India cricket win. The boys were the ‘item numbers” here, no special item girls needed! The film is not entirely devoid of women – there is a girl, Vidya (Amrita Puri), Ishaan’s younger sister, who is tutored in Mathematics by Govind, and they have their own little love story playing out in the midst of it all.The cinematography by Anay Goswamy caresses every corner and crevice of the location, as it does the expressions and angst of the actors, and the contours of their lithe frames. The sound design by Baylon Fonseca is fantastic and adds the requisite depth to the drama.

The story then envelops its main protagonists into the dark recesses of emotional despair where an invincible force of nature turns their simple existence and complex dreams into a pile of debris and dead bodies on 26 January, 2001. Insurmountable troubles abound, with the political climate taking a communal turn, resulting in riots and even more gore and death.
Verdict: Kai Po Che is a good film, but not a great film.

Deepika Padukone gets a secret admirer on Valentine's Day

Secret admirer gifted a dozen tender coconuts to the actress while she was shooting for an ad in Goa. Sounds like someone we know...

Deepika Padukone does seem to be cupid's favourite child this season. The actress not only shares warm vibes with her former boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor, she has found love again in Ranveer Singh, who follows her from Dongri to Dubai with admirable devotion.

To top it all, on February 14, the actress was at the happy receiving end of a rather ingenuous gift from a 'secret admirer'. Deepika was shooting for an ad in Goa, when the incident happened.

An eyewitness from the unit told TOI: "Deepika was shooting in South Goa for an ad. It was a small team which had a meeting with Deepika and began filming soonafter."

The shoot went on for a while, and Deepika would return to her vanity van between her takes. After one such take, a member from the unit approached her with a tender coconut saying someone had just dropped by and requested to hand it over to her.

It was no ordinary coconut, but came with little hearts, ribbons and flowers.

"Deepika glanced at it and asked the unit member to put it aside. She then got busy with her shoot," said the eye witness. But the tender gifts would not stop. Every 60 minutes or so, a mysterious stranger would drop a piece of tender coconut for her and disappear.

The shoot went on for the whole day. It was only in the evening, when Deepika was about to return to the vanity, that she noticed - there were at least a dozen tender coconuts waiting for her. The dimpled actress burst out laughing.

She picked one up and went inside and discovered there was a note attached to it that said: "Here is some tender love and care to the only girl and I am mad about."

Deepika happily shared the note and the tender coconuts with the rest of crew. When TOI got in touch with her, she said she was "extremely touched" by her fan's gesture and his "unique idea."

The crew is still clueless about the identity of Deepika's secret admirer. But we hear, the actress spent the rest of the evening with a Mona Lisa smile on her face. Perhaps she knows more than we will ever know...

Vijay Yesudas turns composer

Vijay Yesudas Photo: K. Ramesh BabuVijay Yesudas has begun 2013 well with two chart toppers composed by A.R. Rahman for Mani Ratnam’s Kadal – ‘Chithirai Nela…’ and ‘Chitti Jaabili’. Although Vijay had sung the hit ‘Sahara’ in the movie Sivajiunder Rahman’s baton, it was not featured in the film. But Vijay has no complaints. “Rahman sir knows what will suit a person’s voice and the song was a huge success.” He also has songs for several forthcoming Malayalam films while last year gifted him hits in Grandmaster, Ee Adutha Kalathu, Spirit (in which he sounded so much like his father, K.J. Yesudas), Run Baby Run, Thappana and so on. In the meantime, he turns composer for Sanjiv Sivan’s Arabian Safari. “We have held discussions in Chennai and I am looking forward to it. But my priority is singing. I have been getting good songs in Tamil and Malayalam thanks to music directors who have faith in me,” says Vijay.

Versatility is his middle name

Actor-writer Murali Gopy dons many caps at the same time. Having made his name as an actor and scriptwriter and winning several awards in the process, he now tests his musical skills in Arun Kumar Aravind’s new film Left Right Left. Murali sings the theme song of the film, which has been written by Rafeek Ahmed and directed by Gopi Sundar. Incidentally, Murali has written the script of the film and is also acting in it. Murali had sung in his Rasikanas well…Look like this versatile artiste has many more tricks up his sleeve.

Karan Johar gets Remo for Siddharth Malhotra’s next film

Karan Johar’s latest discovery, Sidharth Malhotra, is set to team up with his mentor director-producer yet again. The actor, who made his Bollywood debut with the filmmaker’s Student Of The Year (SOTY 2012), was recently signed for Dharma Production’s Hasee Toh Phasee that will be directed by

Vinil Mathew. And now, Karan has roped in the young star for another one of his productions.

KJo has teamed up with UTV to produce this currently-untitled action-adventure flick. Choreographer-director Remo D’Souza (of ABCD fame) has helped develop the script and will also direct the film. “Although the details are being kept under wraps, the genre will be similar to that of the hit Hollywood film franchise, The Fast And The Furious. Sidharth’s role will be very different from how he was seen in SOTY,” says an industry insider.
Insiders maintain that Karan wants the film to be made in a “stylish manner with a lot of snazzy cars and glamorous girls”. “The script has already been finalised. Both Karan and UTV are impressed with Remo’s writing because it has a lot of soul,” says a source.

As for the casting, insiders insist that Sidharth was always the top choice for Remo, UTV and Karan. While the female lead is yet to be finalised, the movie is expected to go on the floors by the end of this year.

Despite repeated attempts, Karan, Sidharth and Remo remained unavailable for comments.

Top seven reel to real love stories

1. Ram Kapoor-Gautami Gadgil
Long before Ram Kapoor began playing the role of a middle aged millionaire; this handsome guy stole the svelte Gautami Gadgil’s heart. The couple met during the shoot of Ghar Ek Mandir. After dating for quite some time, they got married in 2003. The couple looks very much in love every time they make an appearance together. Despite the hot scenes that Ram has begun to indulge in with Sakshi Tanwar in Bade Ache Lagthe Hai, no dent seems to appear in this couple’s relationship.less

2. Gurmeet-Debina
Debina and Gurmeet look like they are made for each other. The muscular Punjabi hunk swept the delicate Bengali girl off her feet when they played characters of Ram and Sita in NDTV Imagine’s Ramayan. After the show, they participated in a reality show named Pati, Patni aur Woh, where they had to live like a married couple and take care of kids, parents and the elderly. No wonder! The good looking couple married soon after the show.less

3. Nandish-Rashmi
Yes, we are talking about Veer and Tapasya who met on the sets of Uttaran and despite playing the role of an estranged couple in the soap; the two are very much in love in real life. Like most of other celeb couples, initially they also denied their relationship but eventually confirmed it, after Nandish proposed Rashmi on the eve of his birthday bash. They got married in a secret ceremony in February 2011.

4. Karan Singh Grover-Jennifer Winget
They met on an aptly named television serial – Dil Mil Gaye, a medical drama which focused more on the doctors’ hearts than the patients’ health. Romance did not immediately flourish because Karan was married to Shraddha Nigam back then. However, rumours began to spread and cracks began to develop in Karan’s married life. Shraddha and Karan divorced and Karan got hitched to Jennifer in a beautiful wedding ceremony.less

5. Indraneil Sengupta-Barkha Bisht
Barkha and Indraneil met on the sets of Pyaar ke do Naam –Ek Radha Ek Shyaam. It was not before long when their on-screen love as Radha and Shyam began to show off-screen as well. The couple got married in 2008 and are blessed with a lovely daughter.

6. Hiten-Gauri
They can very well be tagged as the first Jodi of the 21st century Indian Television. The mischievous, happy-go-lucky Hiten and the reserved, no-nonsense Gauri, make you believe that opposites attract and can have a beautiful married life together. The happiness in their relationship quadrupled with the arrival of a son and a daughter (twins) in 2009.

Vishwaroopam - Movie Review

Cast: Kamal Haasan, Pooja Kumar, Rahul Bose, Shekhar Kapur

Direction: Kamal Haasan
Genre: Action
Duration: 1 hour 50 minutes

Story :  Vishwa is a kathak teacher whose wife Nirupama wants to divorce him because she's in an extramarital affair. And he's even not Alpha-male. But wait, she discovers her husband is not the simpleton she thinks he is. Saying anything more at this juncture will spoil the plot.

Movie Review : Like Hollywood that is obsessed with Osama Bin Ladenand terror post-9/11, actor-writer-director Kamal Haasan, one of India's finest film talents, gets drawn to Osama this time.

The action moves from America to Afghanistan back to America. The timelines go from 2002 to the present. Pre-intermission, the action is set in the terror-infested arid locales of Afghanistan (enchantingly captured) where the hot-blooded Aghanis are all mujahideen, fighting their demons, the Americans. Rahul Bose heads a local terrorist outfit; Kamal Haasan joins in the strife. Life is hard, customs banal, punishments extreme. But Vishwaroop doesn't offer you anything you haven't heard or seen before.

Here one should give the devil his due. The filmmaker is thorough in his study on the subject, transporting you to Afghanistan, making you partially empathise with what is the sad state of affairs in this kingdom ever since the US stepped on this soil.

Rahul Bose's sentence - America is shedding blood for petrol, we're shedding blood to protect Allah - captures the essence of the plot. Kamal also captures nuances of how the gun-culture has seeped into the children of Afghanistan; even blindfolded boys recognise AK-47s and 11 mm bullets!

In the second half, Osama is gone. Televised speeches show Obama preening on victory. But the film tells you that the danger is far from over. Muslim terrorists are still baying for the blood of the Americans. And, some psychos continue to dabble with dirty bombs and suicide bombers. The FBI and an Indian intelligence group are trying to foil an attack that could lead to mass destruction.

Intentions of this film and the maker are good. Kamal's performance is A-grade. However the film fails, especially in the second half because there are no lump-in-the-throat moments; nor is there any shock and awe.
